- Claim: Ignorance is not an object of regret. What is known is regretted, not what is unknown.
- Belief: A sinner’s conscience, in order to be clean, does not wash its hands of regrets. On the contrary, in order to be clean, it bathes its hands in their blood.
- Maxim: Of knowing, especially of self-knowing, regret is sometimes the fruit, sometimes the seed.
With an ambiguity that captures #3, we can say of the sinlessness of Jesus Christ:
One man, only one ever, has known himself without regret.
