An Observation. Of the Internet’s Negativity. Of the Ethical.

Why are the comments on our online posts so increasingly negative, snarky, critical, careless, uncongenial, uncivil? Among the many explanations given is the fact that there is no “dislike” button, no “-1,” etc., in many places. We have an ethical pressure to praise virtue and to decry vice. So, with no easy way of doing the latter, the pressure builds. And then it does eventually find its expression—in the comments.

This would only be surprising to the one who denies that the human tends toward the ethical, that is, toward the attempt to universalize thought through admiration and scorn.
